Walsall
MBC takes the lead against wheel loss
Wheel loss and wheel nut loosening are serious issues for
many fleets, but especially those running refuse collection
vehicles and tippers. Even rigorous maintenance schedules
cannot completely prevent it. However, one forward thinking
Local Authority – Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council
– has been pro-active in trying to put a stop to this
problem.
Due to the nature of the work undertaken,
refuse collection vehicles are more prone to suffering from
wheel nut loosening than other vehicle types. Regular operation
over rough terrain means that punctures become an occupational
hazard. Consequently, wheels are removed regularly and as
a result the wheel bolts deteriorate quicker. This leads to
lower clamping force, and therefore the probability of wheel
nut loosening is increased.
Walsall MBC piloted a scheme with Wheelsure
Ltd to trial their wheel nut locking device. For the past
three years, a Scania refuse vehicle has been fitted with
the Wheelsure device, and the results have been very good.
Mr Andy Ody, Service Manager for Walsall MBC said: “we
are extremely pleased with the results of the trial and the
vehicle fitted with the Wheelsure product has experienced
no further cases of wheel nut loosening. As a result, we are
now considering fitting the device to three Seddon Atkinson
vehicles”.
Gerhard Dodl, chief executive officer of
Wheelsure, commented: “The issue of wheel-nut loosening
is a particular concern for those operating waste vehicles
and tippers. Our product has gone through some rigorous testing
which proved it to be highly durable, and makes it ideal for
use on these types of vehicles. We are 100% confident that
our product will prevent this problem.”
